Our Current Loves From Kate McDONALD:
A little Q&A with the designer:
Q. What is your design inspiration?
Usually a period in time. I love all things mid-century. Styles from the 50’s and 60’s were clean and simple. Fabric, texture and detail made a garment special. I believe in looking back at your wedding and loving your dress as much in 20 years as the first time you tried it on. From fabric sourcing to creating a new silhouette, I keep this in mind.
Q. Tell me two little known facts about you:
1. I once lived with two boys and a goat. Long story.
2. I have a mean addiction to Peeps.
Q. Describe your personal style:
Jeans and a sweater. I love to be comfortable. As a mother of two young boys, my days of wearing heels on a daily basis are long gone. I am a human jungle gym as soon as I walk in the door from work.
Q. What is your favorite article of clothing?
A pair of vintage cowboy boots from the 70’s I bought on eBay and a Vintage Mink Stole my husband gave me for Christmas a few years ago.
Q. Favorite vacation spot:
Jots Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands, Jackson, Wyoming and Udaipur, India
Q. When did you know that you were going to design bridal?
I knew from an early age (6) that I wanted to design clothes. It wasn’t until my Ready-to-Wear Customers were asking me to design their wedding dresses that I started to design bridal. I love working with beautiful fabrics and having the limitations of a neutral color palette. It is very rewarding being a part of the most important dress in a woman’s life.
Q. Who is your style icon?
Living- SJP. Probably because Sex and The City was so influential in my 20’s. Past- Twiggy or Grace Kelly
Q. If you could dress any celebrity, who would it be? SJP
Q. What is the last great book that you read?
Pete the Cat - I have probably read it 50 times this past week. My 2 year old is somewhat obsessed with the little black feline.
Q. Any advice for brides?
Don’t stress over the details. Remember to take a moment during your wedding and look at all of the friends and family that have come to support you and your spouse. It’s a wonderful feeling to be surrounded by so much love. The wedding is just the beginning of a wonderful adventure. Remember there is a lifetime after the party.
