Vatana Watters continues to be at the heart of the company and is passionately involved in setting the design tone. Her inspirations emanate from her heritage, experience on both coasts and the desire to reflect the spirit of the times. Vatana recognizes that design is where it starts, but not where it ends.
Q. What is your design inspiration?
A. I find design inspiration all around- from my day to day life, to my travels. Our team at Watters is very strong and creative. I love collaborating with them and hearing what inspires them as well. We can all agree that exposure to different cultures, architecture, landscapes, and beauty in general has created a visual journey that is always impacting our designs.
Q. Tell me two little known facts about you
A. I am a big fan of Formula One racing (go Hamilton!). I grew up in the Southern California beach town of San Diego which still inspires an effortless look that is reflected in our gowns.
Q. Describe your personal style
A. Minimalist. As a huge fan of Phoebe Philo (#oldceline), I love tailored pieces in neutral colors. I wear mostly black so my whole wardrobe can be mixed and matched. I love mixing high and low pieces as well. A quirky pair of shoes can easily dress up jeans and a top or a sweater. That is my daily uniform.
Q. What is your favorite article of clothing
A. A good pair of jeans- I love dressing them up or down.
Q. Favorite vacation spot:
A. There are so many great places to visit, but I especially love traveling to Cabo because of the short plane ride from Dallas, the dependable weather, and the endless supply of margaritas and ceviche.
Q. When did you know that you were going to design bridal?
A. Growing up I was always repurposing vintage clothes and creating my own look for prom or homecoming. Once I moved to Dallas, I started designing and selling bridesmaids dresses to friends that wanted a unique style for their bridal parties. I always felt the bride should be the star of her wedding, and by 1998 my team and I were ready for the challenge. At that time there was a void in the industry for wedding gowns that were designed with beautiful fabrics and detailing, all at an accessible price point.
Q. Who is your style icon?
A. Coco Chanel because she was such a modern woman ahead of her time. She created so many timeless pieces, such as the little black dress, quilted handbags, and she brought pants, cardigans, and layering into the limelight. Trends today are still a result of her contributions.
Q. Last great book you read?
A. I like to go back and forth between reading business titles and more mindless books. I recently read Blitzscaling by Reid Hoffman and Chris Yeh, and Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan.
Q. Any advice for brides?
A. Pick a dress that reflects your style and that you feel good in, it’s your big day.
Q. What makes your line truly special?
A. The team at Watters is extremely collaborative. We strive to make our dresses beautifully unique and thoughtful in design, while also placing a high importance on materials and construction. We always strive to make sure our gowns are incredibly comfortable for the wearer.
