A little Q&A with the designer of Blush, Hayley Paige
Q: What is your design inspiration?
Happy women. There is nothing better than feeling ignited and motivated by a woman that is balanced in her heart.
Q: Tell me two little known facts about you:
If I wasn’t a designer, I would probably be a surgeon. I did 14 pretty serious years of gymnastics and competed internationally and at the varsity collegiate level. I still throw some handstands in at the gym when no one’s looking :)
Q: Describe your personal style
Fun and fancy. I absolutely love getting all dolled up and having something to attend or someone to accompany. Dress up is something my sister and I started playing when we were little and never really stopped!
Q: What is your favorite article of clothing
This pink eyelet dress that has been passed down from my mom, to my older sister, to me. It’s not a designer piece or anything, but it’s got a lot of textural charm and sentimental value. I feel like it’s also one of those pieces that helped shaped my affinity for novelty fabrics.
Q: Favorite vacation spot
Tahoe. Winter for skiing/snowboarding. Summer for lake sports and mountain biking.
Q: When did you know that you were going to design bridal?
Being a bridal designer was always my answer to the question of what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I was hesitant to solely rely on a profession that felt like I was “shooting for the stars” (like wanting to be a rockstar or actress). I focused a lot on math and science in grade school, but always kept practicing my passion for design and creativity on the side. I would set up these little sewing workshops in my room and make white prom dresses. It wasn’t until I got to Cornell where I experience the most incredible instruction and developed the necessary tools to nurture my craft. I quickly realized my childhood dream to design wedding gowns was not only a viable career path, and but also a way of life and source of happiness for me.
Q: Who is your style icon?
My mom! I think I lot of my aesthetic derived from how she dressed when I was younger. Even more so, I feel like she’s taught me that style is not just about clothing, but also about attitude and how you take care of yourself. My mom is pretty awesome.
Q: If you could dress any celebrity, who would it be?
Olivia Wilde! She recently wore my Petal gown from my Spring 2013 collection for the Avon fragrance campaign and it was utterly swoon worthy! Not to mention, she happens to be an incredible writer (see her article on Glamour.com called “Dos and Dont’s of Turning 30”) and the way her personality comes out makes me think that she is a quintessential representation of the strong, confident, happy female that inspires me every day.
Q: What is the last great book that you have read?
Do Cool Sh*t. It’s a fun manifesto about Entrepreneurship and finding happiness in exercising your full potential. The author just so happens to be a close friend of mine who is kind of like the Kevin Bacon of my life. Almost all my acquaintances and experiences in New York are six degrees of separation from the start of our friendship.
Q: Any advice for brides?
There are no rules so wear what you love, marry the person of your dreams, and have the time of your life!
Q: What makes the Blush line special from a designer perspective?
The Blush collection is a happy-go-lucky combination of quiet glamour, affordability, and girlish charm. It’s a unique opportunity to find a style that is texturally refined and stylishly sweet.
